Home Owner Grants
The Provincial Home Owner Grant (HOG) reduces the amount of property taxes you pay for your principal residence.
To qualify for the grant you must:
- Be the registered owner of the residence
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
- Occupy the residence as your principal residence.
Regular Grant
In addition to the above criteria if you are under 65 years of age you qualify for the Regular (also called Basic) Grant. This grant amount if $770.
Property owners must pay at least $350 in property taxes, as such, if your gross taxes are less than $770 the grant will cover the portion above the $350 you must pay.
Example: Your gross annual property taxes is $700. You will need to pay $350 towards your taxes and the grant will cover the remaining $350.
Senior or Additional Grant
If you are a senior aged 65 or older, or you are a person with disabilities or you are the spouse or relative of a person with disabilities, and that person with disabilities lives with you, and you meet the above criteria you may be eligible for the additional grant of $275. The total grant amount is $1,045.
Under this grant property owners must pay at least $100 in property taxes.
You must apply for the grant each year to receive it. Only one grant can be claimed per property.
